Hickory Construction was proud to see Ben Pinnell, project manager at Hickory, recognized by the Greater Knoxville Business Journal as one of East Tennessee’s “40 Under 40” – presented to 40 rising professionals of distinction in the Greater Knoxville area.
Every year, the publication celebrates 40 professionals, under the age of 40, who are leaving an imprint through their professional and philanthropic efforts. Ben was honored for his achievement at the annual Book of Lists reception at the Knoxville Convention Center on January 17.
Since Ben Pinnell began his employment at Hickory Construction as an assistant field manager in 2005, he has worked his way up to project manager, leading numerous, successful projects—including spearheading “green” building processes and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects.
Ben served on the first project management team at Hickory that penetrated a new market in Chattanooga, Tenn., where Hickory now has more than $40 million in contracts. The first project there included a LEED Gold project for the Tennessee Air National Guard in which Ben served as superintendent for the project, including the following results:
• Hickory diverted 87 percent of all construction waste from the landfill well above the 50 percent target.
• Through design and construction, building energy performance was optimized to be 31.5 percent more efficient than the baseline required.
• The Design Team and Hickory specified and located building materials that contained on average 30.79 percent recycled content, more than 10 percent above the initial requirements.
• The Project Team had planned to reduce potable water consumption by at least 30 percent, but actually achieved a 47.3 percent reduction.
Ben works closely with other Hickory project managers on our LEED-certified buildings. Hickory has now constructed more than 90,000 square feet in LEED Gold and Silver buildings. Ben has also earned a designation of Certified Green Professional through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Ben also established the management and tracking of Hickory Construction’s Equipment Division, keeping an accurate check on equipment inventory, acquisition, invoicing and rentals, and developed a new purchase order tracking system. Needless to say, we’re proud to have such a focused, diverse and dedicated leader on our team.
